Story from the Quilt:
This square honors our mother Ute (pronounced OO-tah) Winston. Ute was German by birth. The design is the centerpiece from a German holiday tablecloth; our Bohemian heritage and family meals are an important part of our tradition. Ute was a beloved mother and friend, and taught at the University of Alabama for 23 years. A true scholar, she enjoyed music and the arts. She was a passionate advocate for peace and justice. She promoted the well-being of the community, as shown by her commitment to being an organ donor and her participation in community service such as literacy tutoring.
