[December 15, 2020 – Birmingham, AL] — Legacy of Hope has a new mural located at the corner of 5th Avenue South and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard. The goal is to generate community conversation around the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation and to encourage people to register to be a donor.
The mural ties in beautifully with the Legacy of Hope logo. The swallow is a symbol of hope, and the wheat a symbol of life. Together they represent the legacy that can be left through organ, eye and tissue donation. Donor registration brings hope to the thousands waiting for life-saving and life-enhancing transplants. When you take your picture in front of the wings and share it, you represent your ability to give life through organ, eye and tissue donation.
“The lives of nearly 110,000 men, women and children depend on the generosity of strangers who say ‘yes’ to organ, eye and tissue donation,” states Ann Rayburn, Director of Education Legacy of Hope. “The donor registry serves as a powerful voice when a person can no longer speak for themselves. The mural offers an easy QR code to the national registry. Registering only takes a few minutes and it can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of countless others through eye and tissue donation.”

Currently, almost 1,300 men, women and children are waiting for a life-saving transplant in Alabama, with nearly 110,000 waiting nationally. A new person is added to the transplant waiting list every 10 minutes and, on average, 20 people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time.
